Loose-leaf paper, printed at home
Run out of notebook paper the night before an assignment is due? This sheet reproduces the familiar loose-leaf page: pale blue lines, a red margin on the left, a blank band at the top for your name and the date, and small circles where a three-hole punch goes. Print as many as you need on ordinary copy paper.
Choosing the ruling
- College ruled, the default: 9/32 inch (7.1 mm) between lines, the usual choice from middle school on.
- Wide ruled: 11/32 inch (8.7 mm), roomier for younger students and larger handwriting.
- Need narrower? See narrow ruled paper.
Tips
- Print double-sided for a real notebook feel; the margin stays on the left of each side.
- Add Name, Class and Date fields under the header options for homework.
- For a full notebook, set the number of pages and bind them with our binding guide.

Frequently asked questions
What is standard notebook paper?
In the US, loose-leaf notebook paper is usually Letter size with college rule (9/32 inch, 7.1 mm) or wide rule (11/32 inch, 8.7 mm) lines, a red margin line about 1¼ inches from the left edge and three punched holes. This sheet copies that layout.
Will the holes line up with my binder?
The guides are placed for the standard US three-ring spacing of 4¼ inches between hole centres. Print at 100% so the spacing stays exact, then punch on the marks or use a three-hole punch.
College ruled or wide ruled?
On a Letter page, college rule fits 32 writing lines and suits middle school and up; wide rule fits 26, with bigger spaces for younger writers. Our guide to which ruling for which grade has the details.
Can I remove the red margin or the hole guides?
Yes. Both are switches in the generator: turn off the red margin line for a plain ruled page, or the hole-punch guides if you are printing on pre-punched paper. The margin can also move to the right for Arabic, Hebrew or Urdu.
