Endless puzzles, all solvable

Sudoku needs only a pencil and logic: every row, every column and every 3 × 3 box must contain the digits 1 to 9 exactly once. A good puzzle has one solution that can be reached by reasoning, not guessing. This generator builds each puzzle from a complete solution and removes clues symmetrically, checking at every step that only one solution remains.

Options

Difficulty. Easy, medium or hard, set by the number of clues and checked by a solver that grades the techniques each puzzle needs; or blank grids. Our sudoku guide explains every technique.

Puzzles per page. One large puzzle for comfortable solving, or four to six smaller ones for a puzzle booklet.

Answer pages. The solutions in the same order, with the original clues in bold and the filled-in digits in blue.

Puzzle book number. Change it for new puzzles; reuse it to reprint the same ones.

Ideas

  • Print a weekly booklet: five pages of four puzzles, easy to hard.
  • Give a class the same puzzle number so everyone solves the same grid.
  • Keep blank grids for copying puzzles you want to try again.

For a longer challenge, try a samurai sudoku: five grids that overlap at the corners, on one page.

Printing tips

Print at 100% / Actual size. Print the puzzle pages and answer pages separately if you are handing them out.

Frequently asked questions

Does every puzzle have exactly one solution?

Yes. Each puzzle is checked with a solver as clues are removed, and a clue is only removed if the puzzle still has a single solution.

How are the difficulty levels set?

By clues and by the techniques each puzzle needs. Easy puzzles have about 38 clues and fall to scanning alone; medium have about 32 and need at most a pair or pointing; hard have 26 to 28 and always need more than scanning: at least spotting the only number a square can take, and often pairs, pointing or an X-wing, but never guessing. A built-in solver grades every puzzle before it is printed.

How do I get new puzzles?

Press New puzzle or change the puzzle book number. Each number gives its own set, and the same number always gives the same puzzles, so you can print the same book again later.

How many puzzles can I print?

One, two, four or six per page and up to 50 pages, each page with different puzzles. With answer pages on, the answers follow the puzzles in the same order.

Can I print blank sudoku grids?

Yes. Choose Blank grids to print empty 9 × 9 grids for copying puzzles from a newspaper or making your own.

Are the rules printed?

No, the page is kept clean. The rule is simple: fill every row, column and 3 × 3 box with the digits 1 to 9, once each.
