Paper for numbers

Before spreadsheets, accountants worked on columnar pads: a narrow line for each entry, columns for amounts and a fine rule to keep the cents in line. The layout still works whenever figures need to be written by hand and added up, from club treasurers’ records to household budgets and school maths.

Options

Amount columns. One to twelve.

Description and date columns. A wide description column on the left and an optional date column.

Money split. A fine line before the last quarter of each amount column for cents.

Row numbers. Number the rows down the left for reference.

Tips

  • Write figures right-aligned against the cents line.
  • Rule a double line under totals.
  • Use one sheet per month and carry totals forward.

Printing tips

Print at 100% / Actual size. Use landscape for more than six amount columns.

Frequently asked questions

What is columnar paper?

Paper ruled into rows and vertical columns for figures, traditionally used in bookkeeping. A wide column on the left holds descriptions and narrower columns hold amounts.

What does the dollars and cents split do?

A fine line inside each amount column separates whole units from cents (or pence), so figures stay aligned on the decimal point and add up easily.

How many columns can I have?

From 1 to 12 amount columns, plus optional row number, date and description columns.

Which row height should I choose?

1/4 inch (6.35 mm) is the traditional ledger ruling; 9/32 inch or 7 to 8 mm gives more room for handwriting.

Can I use it for a monthly budget?

Yes. Use one column per month or per category. For a ready-labelled budget, see the budget and log sheets.

Is landscape better for many columns?

Yes. With eight or more columns, landscape keeps each column wide enough for figures.
