The pad lawyers made famous
The yellow legal pad is a fixture of American offices: law firms, courtrooms, newsrooms and boardrooms all run on it. Its look is instantly recognisable — wide lines on yellow stock, a double rule marking off the top of the page and a red margin down the left — and its extra length means fewer page turns during a long deposition, interview or meeting.
Writers and editors like it for drafting, too: the long sheet and roomy lines leave space for corrections squeezed between lines and notes in the margin.
This template recreates that layout in the generator. The double rule sits above the first writing line, leaving a header band at the top for a case name, client or date. The margin line at 1¼ inch gives you a column for timestamps, exhibit numbers or action markers.
Yellow or white?
The yellow fill makes the page look right on screen and in a PDF you share. When printing many sheets, though, it is kinder to your ink cartridge to switch to the white variant and load yellow or canary paper — most office suppliers stock it in Legal and Letter. The ruling is identical either way.
Some people prefer white for scanning, since a yellow background can turn grey or muddy once photocopied.
Choosing the size
- Legal (8.5 × 14 in) — the classic pad length, 35 lines, for long notes and drafting.
- Letter (8.5 × 11 in) — 26 lines, fits standard binders and folders and every home printer.
- Junior (5 × 8 in) — 17 lines, for a phone-side message pad or a pocket in a work bag.
If you write small and want more lines on the long sheet, a Legal page of narrow ruled paper holds 48. For tables and sketches on the same long format, try legal-size graph paper.
Making a tear-off pad
Print a stack, square it on a desk, clamp the top edge between two boards or binder clips, and brush a few coats of PVA glue along the top. Once dry you have a pad whose sheets tear off cleanly — a nice touch for a home office or a classroom role-play set.

Frequently asked questions
What ruling does a legal pad use?
Standard legal pads use wide ruling, 11/32 inch (8.7 mm), often called "legal ruled". That is the spacing on this template.
How many lines are on a printable legal pad page?
The 8.5 × 14 inch Legal sheet has 35 writing lines with half-inch margins. The Letter-size version has 26, and the 5 × 8 inch junior page has 17.
Will the yellow background use a lot of ink?
A full-page tint does use more ink than lines alone, and most printers leave a white border around it. For long runs, choose the White page variant and print on yellow paper instead.
Does it have the double margin line of a real legal pad?
This template draws a double red rule across the top and a single red vertical margin at 1¼ inch. Many store-bought pads have a double vertical line; the single line serves the same purpose of separating notes from labels and dates.
Can I print on Legal paper at home?
Most home printers have a manual or main tray that accepts 8.5 × 14 inch paper. Choose Legal in the print dialog's paper size and print at Actual size. If you only have Letter, use the Letter-size variant rather than scaling the Legal page down.
