Find your ring size at home

Buying a ring online or as a surprise usually means guessing the size. A printed sizer gives a reliable estimate, as long as it is printed at exactly the right scale.

Two ways to measure

Sizing strip. Wrap it round the finger like a ring; best when there is no existing ring to measure.

Circle chart. Place a ring that already fits on the circles; best for surprise gifts if you can borrow a ring.

Ring size chart

US and Canadian sizes, with the inner diameter and circumference the sizer is drawn from (11.63 mm plus 0.8128 mm per size). The circumference in millimetres is also the ISO size used in most of Europe; UK letters are from the standard equivalency table.

Each whole US size adds 0.81 mm to the diameter. Our ruler and ring sizer guide explains how scaling changes the reading.

Tips for an accurate result

  • Print at 100% / Actual size and check with a ruler first.
  • Measure at room temperature, late in the day.
  • Make sure the strip slides over the knuckle.
  • Between two sizes, choose the larger, especially for wide bands.

Printing tips

Print at 100% / Actual size on normal paper; card is too stiff for the strip.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a printable ring sizer?

It is a good guide if it is printed at 100% / Actual size; check the scale with the printable ruler first. For an expensive ring or a size between two sizes, have a jeweller confirm it.

How do I use the strip?

Cut out the strip and cut the slit on the red line. Wrap it round the base of your finger with the numbers facing out, push the pointed end through the slit and read the US size at the slit. It should be snug but still slide over the knuckle.

How do I use the circles?

Place a ring that fits on the circles. The circle whose outline matches the inside edge of the ring is the size. Each circle shows the US size and the inner diameter in millimetres.

Which sizing system is this?

US and Canadian sizes, where the inner diameter is about 11.63 mm plus 0.8128 mm for each size, so size 7 is about 17.3 mm. Other countries use different scales; use the diameter in millimetres to convert.

When is the best time to measure?

At the end of the day at room temperature. Fingers are smaller in the cold and larger when warm.

How do I determine my ring size at home?

Print the sizer at 100%, check the scale with a ruler, then either lay a ring that fits on the circles and match its inside edge, or wrap the strip round the base of your finger and read the size at the slit. Measure two or three times, late in the day.

What ring size is average for men and for women?

Sizes vary widely, so measure rather than guess. As a rough guide, many women's rings are sold around US 6 to 7 and many men's around US 9 to 10.

How do I convert US ring sizes to UK or European sizes?

Use the chart on this page. European (ISO) sizes are the inner circumference in millimetres, so a US 7 at 54.4 mm is about a 54; the UK uses letters, two letters per US size, so a US 7 is about N½.

Why does my size differ on different fingers?

Fingers vary in size, and dominant hands are often slightly larger. Measure the finger the ring is for.
