A Letter sheet with more room
Legal paper keeps the familiar 8.5 inch width of Letter, so it slides through the same paper guides and onto the same clipboards, but it runs to 14 inches long. On graph paper that extra length becomes 12 more rows of quarter-inch squares (52 instead of 40), or 24 more rows at 1/8 inch. For anything that grows downward, such as a column of figures, a daily log or a tall drawing, that difference often means finishing on one page instead of two. A month of daily entries, one per row with a heading line, fits on a single portrait sheet.
Legal is still used for some contracts, real-estate forms and printed spreadsheets, which is why it is easy to find in American and Canadian office supply stores.
Spacings that suit the long page
- 1/4 inch (default): 30 × 52 squares with bold inch lines, a good fit for general math, floor plans and hand-drafted spreadsheets.
- 1/8 inch: 60 × 104 squares for detailed elevations or long pixel-art strips.
- 1/5 inch engineering: 37 × 65 squares, giving problem sets more working space per page.
- 1/2 inch: 15 × 26 large squares for classroom charts and vertical bar graphs.
Landscape layouts
Turned sideways, a Legal sheet becomes a 14 × 8.5 inch canvas, and the quarter-inch grid runs 52 squares across. That is enough for a full year of weekly columns, which makes landscape Legal a favorite for budget trackers, seating charts, production timelines and wide room plans like a long kitchen wall at 1/4 inch = 1 foot. Choose the landscape variation above or flip the orientation switch in the generator.
Printing on Legal
Before printing, adjust the paper guide in your tray, then select Legal as the paper size and Actual size for scaling. If your printer feeds Legal only through a bypass slot, print a single test page first and check that the bottom rows are not cut off. Measuring four bold blocks should give exactly four inches; if not, the page has been shrunk to fit. For writing rather than drawing, our legal pad paper brings the same long format to lined pages.

Frequently asked questions
What size is legal paper?
US Legal is 8.5 × 14 inches (215.9 × 355.6 mm). It is the same width as Letter but three inches longer, and it is used mainly in the United States and Canada.
How many 1/4 inch squares fit on legal paper?
With half-inch margins the grid is 30 × 52 squares, compared with 30 × 40 on Letter, so you gain 12 extra rows. In landscape the grid becomes 52 × 30.
Will my printer handle legal size?
Most office laser printers and many home inkjets accept Legal, often through an adjustable main tray or a manual feed slot. Check that the paper guide is extended and choose Legal in the print dialog.
What is legal graph paper good for?
Anything taller than it is wide: long data tables, multi-month timelines drawn down the page, tall building elevations, stair and shelving plans, and spreadsheets worked out by hand before typing them.
Can I print legal graph paper on A4?
Not at the correct scale; A4 is 58 mm shorter. Outside North America, choose A4 graph paper or A3 for extra length instead.
