The American hand
Spencerian script was the standard business and correspondence hand in the United States in the second half of the nineteenth century. It is lighter and more delicate than Copperplate, with gentle shading only on some strokes and long, flowing capitals. Practising it builds a steady slant and rhythm that improves everyday cursive too.
Reading the guides
Each line has a baseline and an x-height line, with ascender and descender lines twice the x-height away. Fine diagonal lines at 52 degrees cross the page so every downstroke can follow the same slant. Keep the x-height small at first; small letters are easier to keep consistent.
Practice drills
- Ovals: continuous direct and indirect ovals along the slant.
- Principles: the straight line, right curve, left curve and loops that build every letter.
- Minuscules: i, u, w, then n and m, then the loop letters.
- Capitals: the large oval-based capitals once the small letters are steady.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Spencerian slant?
52 degrees from the baseline, a slightly stronger lean than Copperplate's 55. The slant lines on the sheet are drawn at exactly that angle.
What proportions are used?
2:1:2. The ascender space is twice the x-height and the descender space is twice the x-height. With the default 5 mm x-height, each line is 25 mm tall.
How do I change the size?
For pointed-pen hands, the size setting is the x-height itself, not a nib width. Set it from 3 to 7 mm depending on your nib and experience.
What pen do I need?
A pointed flexible nib in an oblique holder is traditional. Spencerian uses less shading than Copperplate, so a firmer nib or even a fine pencil works for learning the forms.
