All 26 letters, grouped by movement

This sheet prints the lowercase cursive alphabet in four blocks. Each block starts with a solid model row, then dotted rows to trace with a green dot where the pen starts, then a blank row to write the letters alone.

GroupLettersHow they start
Over the topc a d g o qA lead-in up to the top, then round to the left like a c
Tall loopsl b h k f eA lead-in that loops up (or, for e, a small loop at mid-height)
Humps and pointsn m v x y zA short lead-in, then over a hump or down to a point
Up and downi t u w j p r sA lead-in straight up to the top of the letter

From letters to joins

When single letters are comfortable, choose Joined pairs for common joins such as an, it, be, ve and th. The pairs after o, v, w and b practise the midline join, the part of cursive most children find hardest. Then move on to whole words with the cursive tracing maker.

Practice tips

  • Say the movement aloud as you trace: “up, over, round and off”.
  • Trace each letter three times, then write it once without dots.
  • Keep the slant the same for every letter; cursive paper with slant guides helps.

Printing tips

Print at 100% on Letter or A4. The default letter height is 5/8 inch; choose Larger letters for beginners.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the letters in groups?

Letters that start with the same movement are easier to learn together. Here they are grouped by how our letters begin: over the top like c (c, a, d, g, o, q), tall loops (l, b, h, k, f, e), humps and points (n, m, v, x, y, z), and straight up-and-down starts (i, t, u, w, j, p, r, s).

Why are the letters spaced apart?

So each letter can be practised on its own, starting from its lead-in and ending with its exit stroke. The Joined pairs version then practises the joins.

Which letters join from the top?

o, b, v and w end at the midline, so the next letter is joined along the midline instead of from the baseline. The pair "ve" in the Joined pairs version shows this.

Is there an uppercase cursive version?

No. Capitals on these sheets are printed and stand alone, which keeps the focus on the lowercase joins children use most.
