A register that fits any month

Attendance only needs a list of names and a column per session, but most templates come with the wrong number of days. This sheet has 23 numbered columns, the most weekdays any month can have, so a single page always covers the month. Write the class and month in the header, the dates above the columns, and the names down the side.

Who uses it

  • Teachers and tutors keeping a paper register alongside the school system.
  • Clubs, choirs and sports teams tracking who comes to training.
  • Volunteer groups recording hours or shifts.
  • Small businesses logging staff days in.

Tips

Write names in the same order every month, often alphabetical by surname, so you can compare months quickly. Shade weekends or holidays in grey before the month starts. At the end of the month, total each row in the last column you didn’t use. For seating plans, see the seating chart, and for events with unknown guests, a sign-in sheet.

Printing

The sheet prints in landscape so the day columns are wide enough to mark. Print at 100% / Actual size on Letter or A4.

Frequently asked questions

Why 23 day columns?

A month has at most 23 weekdays, so one sheet covers every school or working day in any month. For weekly clubs, use the first four or five columns.

How many names fit?

20 on a landscape Letter or A4 page with 8 mm rows, and about 23 with the compact rows. For larger classes, print two pages.

What marks should I use?

A common scheme is a tick or / for present, A for absent, L for late and E for excused. Write your key in the header so anyone covering for you can follow it.

Do I write the dates?

Yes. The columns are numbered 1 to 23; write the actual date or day above each one you use.
