Big enough to write in
With 1 cm sides, every hexagon is nearly 2 cm wide, enough to write a short label, a number or a symbol inside. That makes this grid a good fit for hex-based board game prototypes, territory maps, habit trackers drawn as honeycombs, and classroom sorting activities where each cell holds a word.
Maths in the grid
Every regular hexagon splits into six equilateral triangles, so this sheet pairs well with 1 cm isometric paper, which has triangles of the same side. Students can count triangles to find a hexagon’s area, explore why hexagons tessellate with no gaps, and compare perimeter and area with a square of the same side.
Design and making
- Mosaics and tiling: plan hexagonal tile layouts at a convenient scale.
- Laser cutting and 3D printing: sketch parts with sides in whole centimetres.
- Garden beds and patios: draw hexagonal paving with one hexagon per paver.
Printing
Print at 100% / Actual size on A4 or Letter. Check one side with a metric ruler: it should measure exactly 10 mm.

Frequently asked questions
How big is each hexagon?
Each side is 10 mm. The hexagon is 20 mm across the corners and 17.32 mm across the flat sides.
What is a hexagon's area at this size?
About 2.6 cm² (2.598 × the side squared). That makes it handy for area problems that compare hexagons with squares and triangles.
Why choose metric hexes?
If you work with metric rulers, mosaic tiles or 3D-printing designs measured in millimetres, whole-centimetre sides keep the arithmetic simple.
How does it compare with 5 mm hex paper?
Twice the side length, so each hexagon has four times the area. Use 5 mm hex paper for detailed maps and molecules, and 1 cm when you need to write inside each cell.
