One shape, many quilts
The equilateral triangle is the simplest patchwork shape that tiles a plane. Alternate the triangles point up and point down in rows and you have a one-patch quilt, a great way to use a stack of scraps. Grouping triangles by colour creates hexagons, larger triangles, stars and chevron effects without any other shape.
Piecing tips
- Basting: glue basting handles the 60° points neatly; with thread, take one stitch at each corner.
- Rows: join triangles into rows, alternating point up and point down, then join the rows.
- Hexagon units: six triangles around a centre point make a hexagon with the same side length.
- Machine piecing: cut fabric with the seam allowance variation and sew with an exact 1/4 inch seam.
Planning
Every cell on isometric graph paper is an equilateral triangle, so it is the natural planning grid. Colour a design, count each colour, and print enough papers. Triangles pair with 60° diamonds and hexagons of the same side length.
Printing
Print at 100% / Actual size and measure one side before cutting. A pack of card templates can be reused several times.

Frequently asked questions
How big is a 2 inch triangle?
Each side is 2 inches and the triangle is about 1.73 inches tall from base to point.
How many triangles are on a page?
Fifteen 2 inch triangles on Letter without seam allowance, or six with the 1/4 inch seam allowance outline, which needs room around each point to cut along.
What can I make with equilateral triangles?
One-patch triangle quilts, hexagons (six triangles around a point), larger triangles (four small ones), and star points around a hexagon centre.
Are these the same as half-square triangles?
No. Half-square triangles have a 90° corner and two 45° corners. Equilateral triangles have three 60° corners and need a 60° ruler or templates like these.
