Division from the tables

Every question on this sheet is a times table fact turned round: 63 ÷ 9 comes from 7 × 9. That keeps the answers between 1 and 12 with no remainders, so the sheet practises recall rather than long division.

Think multiplication

The quickest way to answer 48 ÷ 6 is to ask “six times what makes 48?” Encourage children to say the matching multiplication in their head. The fact families version makes this explicit by mixing both kinds of question, so 6 × 8 = 48 and 48 ÷ 6 = 8 appear on the same page.

Building up

  1. Practise division only for tables the child already knows well.
  2. Start with one table at a time in the times table worksheet generator.
  3. Move to this mixed sheet once three or four tables are secure.
  4. Use the missing-number setting for questions like 56 ÷ __ = 7, which need the same fact used another way.

Printing tips

Print at 100% on Letter or A4. Keep the answer page separate if the sheet is going home as homework.

Frequently asked questions

Do any questions have remainders?

No. Every question is the reverse of a times table fact, such as 56 ÷ 8 from 7 × 8, so every answer is a whole number from 1 to 12.

What are fact families?

The four facts made from the same three numbers: 7 × 8 = 56, 8 × 7 = 56, 56 ÷ 8 = 7 and 56 ÷ 7 = 8. The Fact families version mixes multiplication and division so children see the link.

Should division come after multiplication?

Usually, yes. Each division fact is a multiplication fact read backwards, so it is easiest once the matching table is known. England's curriculum names multiplication and division facts together for each table.

Can I practise dividing by one number?

Yes. Type a single table, such as 6, in the times table worksheet generator and choose Division, for questions like 42 ÷ 6.
