Cards for notes, recipes and talks
Index cards are one of the most flexible paper tools: one fact per card for revision, one recipe per card for a box in the kitchen, one point per card for a presentation, one scene per card for planning a story. Printing your own means you can make exactly as many as you need, on the card stock you have.
Using them for study
Write a question or term on one side and the answer on the back, then sort the cards into piles of known and not yet known. Reviewing the unknown pile more often is the simple version of spaced repetition. For short single-word cards, the flashcards layout fits ten or twelve per page.
Other uses
- Speaking notes: number the cards and write one point per card in large letters.
- Recipe cards: the 4 × 6 inch variation fits a standard recipe box.
- Writing and planning: a card per scene, character or task that can be shuffled into order on a table.
Printing
Print at 100% / Actual size so the cards are exactly 3 × 5 inches and fit standard boxes and dividers. Cut with a guillotine or a craft knife and ruler for straight edges.

Frequently asked questions
How many index cards fit on a page?
Three 3 × 5 inch cards on Letter or A4, or two 4 × 6 inch cards. Cut along the dashed lines.
What paper should I print on?
Card stock of 160–220 gsm (60–80 lb cover) feels like a real index card and stands up in a box. Plain paper works for cards kept in a binder.
Are the lines the right spacing?
The lines are 7 mm apart, close to the ruling of shop-bought lined index cards, with a wider space at the top for a heading.
Can I print on both sides?
Yes. Print the same page twice, flipping the sheet on the long edge; the cards line up because they are centred on the page.
