Inserts for the long, slim notebook

Traveler’s-style notebooks are built around tall, narrow inserts held in a leather or fabric cover by elastic bands. The regular size, 110 × 210 mm, is popular with travelers, sketchers and planners because it slips into a coat pocket or bag sleeve and still offers a full A5 height. Printing your own inserts lets you choose the grid, the paper weight and the number of pages instead of buying refills.

At 5 mm the narrow page gives 18 gaps across — enough for a two-column packing list, a seven-day weekly with one row per hour band, or a sketch strip running down the page. Drop to 4 mm dots if you write small and want 22 gaps to work with.

Ideas for a dotted insert

  • Travel journal — date, location and a few lines per day, with room for a ticket stub or quick sketch.

  • Daily planner — a vertical timeline down the left third, tasks on the right.

  • Sketch log — thumbnails for urban sketching, framed between dots so each one has the same proportions.

  • Expense tracker — rule three columns dot to dot for item, currency and amount.

  • Language notes — new words down the left, translations on the right, with a column of dots as the divider.

If you carry two or three inserts at once, give each a different header title or print on tinted paper so you can tell them apart at the edge.

The travel log variant adds a title and a date field at the top of every page, which saves writing the same heading each morning.

Printing, trimming and binding

Home printers rarely stock 110 × 210 mm paper, so the practical route is to print on A4 or Letter at Actual size and cut to size with a craft knife and steel rule. The dots stop 10 mm from the page edge, so measure 10 mm outward from the outer rows on every side. Heavier paper (90–120 gsm) handles fountain pens and light washes better than standard copier stock.

For pages you plan to stack, set Pages in the PDF to the number you need and turn on page numbers so the order survives trimming. Prefer a wider, journal-sized page? The A5 dot grid prints as a ready-made booklet.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a regular traveler's notebook insert?

The regular size is 110 × 210 mm (about 4.33 × 8.27 in): the same height as A5 but much narrower. This page uses exactly that size.

How many dots fit on a traveler's notebook page?

With 10 mm margins the page holds 19 dots across and 39 down at 5 mm spacing. The 4 mm variant gives 23 × 48.

How do I print a 110 × 210 mm page at home?

Either set a custom paper size of 110 × 210 mm in your printer driver and feed pre-cut paper, or print onto A4 or Letter at Actual size and trim around the dots, leaving 10 mm beyond the outer rows. One A4 sheet can be cut into two blanks of this size.

Can I print these as a folded booklet?

Booklet mode in the generator supports A5, A6, Half Letter, B5 and B6, not this narrow size. Print single pages, stack them, and staple or sew along the left edge, or punch them for an elastic-band cover.

Do these fit passport-size notebooks?

No. Passport-size inserts are much smaller than the regular size. The pocket variant here (3.5 × 5.5 in) fits memo-book-style notebooks; for other sizes, enter a custom size in the generator.
